Fantastic experience: Our 9 week old puppy was recently rushed here in an emergency, the staff were so unbelievably kind and caring. They kept us up to date constantly and saved my puppy’s life. We will be eternally grateful for the vets and nurses.

Fantastic experience: Had the best experience with neurologist Alfonso in dealing with our poor dachshund with IVDD. Can not recommend the SAH enough! Alfonso phoned every day with updates and ensured our dog was getting the best care.

Thank you for your kind words, we will make sure Alfonso sees this.

Negative experience: I got referred to the hospital from my vet after seeing multiple vets. I attended for my appointment, checked in and after 20 minutes the receptionist informed me they knew I was waiting and I would be seen soon. After an hour I was still waiting and when I informed the reception I would have to go as I have been waiting over an hour I was then seen (the place was not busy at all) I then seen the vet who disagreed with the multiple vets that I had seen before and suggested blood tests and stool sample tests, which I had already completed with other vets. The blood sample tests was done there and then however no results where given. I was then asked would I like to go through the insurance and it would be £30 for the hospital to deal with it on my behalf which I agreed upon. The stool samples I was told to take over 3 days which I did and handed these in. 10 days or so passed and I attempted to contact for an update however there is no phone number and I emailed However had no reply. When I eventually got a reply I was informed they had lost the stool samples and I would have to repeat this again. I requested they send me the sample bottles out to my house which I never received a reply however did get the bottles the next day. I then repeated the stool samples again and handed these into the hospital. I am still waiting on results or any updates which I have not received. I have also asked several times for a food recommendation change which I still have not heard about either. I then got an email from my insurance company stating they will not be paying the bill due to the being on ongoing issue. I then received a reply from the hospital within a couple of days asking for the remaining balance. I still have not received any updates or test results with no contact except when looking for the remaining balance to be paid and I am still in the same position as when I started just £650 down and this is very disappointing.

Fantastic experience: I have been regularly attending the small animal hospital for several months now to see the neurology team who have helped to manage my dogs epilepsy. Unfortunately despite a lot of effort and the help of these amazing specialists we were unable to give him the quality of life he deserves and had to make the difficult decision to put him to sleep this week. I can truly say without the neurology team I don't believe I'd have gotten these last few months with my amazing dog and they made the difficult process of saying goodbye that little bit easier. Having worked closely with a few members of the team and seen their passion and kindness it has brought a lot of comfort that we had given him the best possible chance.

Fantastic experience: We were referred from Perth to Glasgow as our cat was poorly, as soon as we arrived rascal was taken immediately for treatment, then a Gemma from cardiology looked after him she was such a lovely vet and kept us up to date with all rascals test results etc I got multiple calls every day, sadly the prognosis wasn’t good but without her we wouldn’t of been bid to take our boy home to spend his final week at home, and they I am forever thankful.

Thank you for your kind words Kelly, we are sorry for your loss

Negative experience: Avoid this place. We had a terrible experience when our family dog was, recently, put to sleep. Staff very uncaring, with the exception of the vet. We were misinformed of the procedure and we were left not knowing what was going on. For a very expensive pet practice this is deplorable. Please train your staff on compassion, as none was shown.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear about your experience and understand how distressing this situation must have been for you and your family. Compassion and clear communication are very important to us, and we regret if we did not meet your expectations.

Negative experience: Last year my cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My local vet suggested i131 treatment as a curative option and referred him to the Small Animal Hospital. At the end of December I arranged treatment for him for the last week in January. Took him down on the Monday (370 mile round trip) and was advised he would be treated on Thursday, enter isolation for 2 weeks and then be discharged. A couple of days later the treatment day was changed to Friday. That morning I received a phone call saying they didn’t have the medication and to come and collect him as they didn’t know when it would be available. Turned out someone had forgotten to do their advanced order for the medication during Xmas/New Year period!! He was discharged with a letter that had no advice regarding ongoing management of his condition. I didn’t see a vet at that time as he was handed over to me by a nurse in the waiting room. No discussion, no advice. A few weeks later admission was arranged again. During the admission appointment the problems during the initial admission were discussed and I was told I would be ‘helped’ with the costs of the treatment. Treatment was completed and he was discharged. The bill was issued and the only thing I wasn’t charged for was the 2nd admission appointment. I queried this and the only reply I got was the original bill re-issued. As a follow up a blood test was required. This has now shown that Thomas is suffering from hypothyroidism. Yes, I was advised that there was a risk of this happening but the reality is this has happened because the vet involved has calculated the dose of the medication wrongly when assessing his physical condition and his bloods at that time and he has been over medicated. £3.5K later (because of the 2 admissions and tests being carried out twice despite this being their fault) 4 x 370 mile round trips, a cat that returned home as an anxious boy ( which I assumed is a result of the long hospitalisation and is on me for putting him through this). Dealing with an organisation that can’t ensure it has the necessary medications it requires, no formal reply to both emails I sent regarding the poor service they provided and now a cat that is back requiring daily medication for a condition that cannot be cured has left me absolutely regretting taking Thomas to this hospital and leaving him in their care. Their lack of ‘customer service’ and disappointing medical treatment outcome is mindblowing and I cannot recommend them to any cat owner who may be considering this treatment for their cat. Dick Vet outside Edinburgh offer this service so I suggest you get your vet to refer your animal there. It would be impossible for them to provide a service experience worse than mine with the Small Animal Hospital who don’t deserve the 1 star but I had to give them that to be able to leave the review….. Thank you Small Animal hospital for your response where you have asked me to email. As I stated in my original post I’ve already sent 2 emails without formal response so will pass on sending a third. The 1st prompted a phone call. The 2nd was acknowledged when I phoned to check it had been seen. It had apparently been forwarded onto the appropriate department then too. Nothing more was heard. So from that experience I wouldn’t hold my breath for a response to any further emails sent to the hospital. Good to see that responses are done though. Shame it has to be via a public platform….

The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital

Hello Alison,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your visit to the Small Animal Hospital did not meet your expectations, and we understand how distressing this situation must have been for both you and Thomas.

David Smith Posted on Google 10 months ago

Fantastic experience: I cannot fault the care that my boy has received and continues to receive. The only downside for me was that my vet was foreign and spoke in broken English which meant at times I couldn't fully understand what they were saying or what I was agreeing to. Had my girl at Edinburgh University small animal hospital last year and as well as regular updates by phone I also received regular emails with updates, which for a non vet made the process easier to understand. Maybe this is something Glasgow could adopt in the future?

The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital

Thank you so much for your kind review and for trusting us with your pet’s care.
We truly appreciate your feedback and understand that communication is a vital part of the veterinary experience.

As a teaching hospital, we are proud to host a diverse team of veterinary professionals from around the world. Fantastic experience: People here are all very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the reason for going was not good, but they were understanding and did the best they could. We went back later to show our appreciation and give them chocolates. So it wasn't quite such a dramatic time. Thank you to all the staff.

Thank you Andy for your kind words

Negative experience: Very disappointed with this vet hospital because we presented with our dog who has a blocked bile duct with a stone and we presented as an emergency for pain relief but were turned away as our registered vet lies outwith their catchment area so we're told to go back to our vets and get a referral letter meanwhile our dog was in agony. I had hoped that their duty of care and compassion was towards small animals.

Positive experience: Personally, I have only used or tried to use them for exotics (ferrets) and found they weren't great however I understand that knowledge on exotics isn't a guarantee and you have to take what you get. Regardless, my boy survived a soft blockage (which you cannot always feel by hand) in spite of the emergency visit. He was kept hydrated as best as possible until we could seek care elsewhere, but we really did think we were going to lose him in a horrific way. Please note that this was a few years ago. My issue is the phone service, which I have consistently failed to get through. It rang and rang on several occasions and I do expect a wait of course but not nothing. At these times, I have phoned another emergency vets who are further way by quite a bit but have always answered and have managed to see my pets when needed. We head to the other side of the city for them which isn't ideal when time is of the essence however the other vets have gone above & beyond. They also say that their vet is not a specialist in the species if that's the case, but always double check their knowledge which is appreciated. My Review is more of a warning to other pet owners to have a secondary emergency vet in your mind (&saved in your phone!) in case they don't answer for any reason. Especially if you have exotics as you may need to seek out a second emergency vet for other care depending on the experience level of the vet you see. I have spoken to many other pets owners of just cats&dogs who have said they have similar experiences or felt they were not listened to, although I cannot speak on the latter myself. I hear great things about their General Practice day service though! *Unable to respond to owner's reply, so just editing here with response: Thank you for the response, and I do understand most vets do not have an exotics specialist, unfortunately I still felt it was handled poorly and we were sent away without feeling listened to. I hold no ill will about this though, as I managed to keep my boy just hydrated enough (though still very poorly) for him to make it to the vet and he has survived. In regards to phone calls, the last time I attempted to call was late at night in January 2024 for another pet, and once a few months prior to that although I cannot recall the month exactly. I hope it has continue to improve since then as I hear your facilities are top notch for general practice.

The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital

Thank you for your review. We have been improving our phone service over the past few years, so we feel this has approved with our new system. Unfortunately we do not have an exotics specialist on our team, but we do strive to provide the best possible emergency care.

Fantastic experience: The service from the reception team to the vet and their staff was exceptional. Their main concern was the welfare of the patient which was our dog. Fantastic experience: Cannot rate this place highly enough. I have been here a few times with different hamsters and they are always so great. Don't agree with the reviews that they are money grabbing as they provide an amazing service for a completely reasonable price during out of hours and you can't put price on an animals well being . Thank you to everyone who helped my little hamster Ellie over the last few days you were all brilliant x

Thank you Kim, hope Ellie is doing well!

Negative experience: took my vunrability and eagerness to save my dog all the money they took after long stressful 2 weeks to say she was fine and coming home to then not even 12 hours later she has a rare incurable ongoing disease and the symptoms was…the ones I told them on day 1, the stress and anxiety they gave me telling me one thing and my dad another was devastated to lose my poor dog and she was only young but still could of researched what I said on day 1 abit longer instead of dragging my dog through all this unnecessary surgery and completely deteriorated my little dog. Money grabbing scum

Negative experience: I know this is a emergency service and they prioritise cases but we called the night previous and were told to leave it till next day as more vets would be on duty so that our anxious cat would not be sitting about and less anxious we have arrived at scheduled time and have been sitting here for over an hour and half. With still no sign of any vet not great

Fantastic experience: My kitten Casper was referred to the hospital after not being able to walk on his back legs and losing strength in his front legs, he was under the care of Grace in neurology, today we got him back after 2 hard days and it’s just the beginning of the recovery period but from start to finish Grace was clearly very knowledgeable in the area, made it clear to me what was going to happen and it was a straightforward and stress free process despite how my kitten was doing, I will be back soon for a check up but thank you Grace and the team for making it so easy for me and my family, we will see you soon.

Negative experience: Phoned on Thursday evening (as advised by our vet) as our dog was throwing up blood. As soon as I said he wasn't insured (although we have savings that would cover all bills) I was told they'd "need to check if the vet will accept him" and they would call us back. I asked if we could just start heading over to the hospital as we live in Cumbernauld and that it was clearly an emergency but was told no, to wait on a call. Meanwhile our dog started bleeding even more heavily and was struggling to breathe. We got him to a local vet that was open late but it was too late to save him. To make it worse this so called hospital phoned an hour later asking how our "dog is feeling now"! He's dead, that's how he's feeling. Maybe if you had seen him and not taken an hour to call us back then just maybe he'd still be with us but we'll never know. Will never use or recommend this hospital to anyone, money taking priority over the lives of animals is unacceptable. RIP Fergus.

The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital

Hello Jo, firstly let me say how sorry I am for the loss of Fergus. Our pets are our family and it is never easy when they pass away. I have looked in to the night in question and spoken to the people who were involved.
We treat all our clients and patients the same, whether they are insured or not. The reason you were told the vet would call back is because you had called the referral reception number and not our out of hours number, as our OOH service does not open till 6pm.
The vet working was dealing with an emergency transfer at the time so could not speak to you and called you back as soon as she was available, we are really sorry that this was too late for Fergus.
If you would like to discuss this further then please contact the hospital on 0141 330 5848.

Fantastic experience: We had to get our elderly Springer dog put to sleep recently 4 days after Christmas, never an easy time. Our dog had been suffering on and off from various medical issues for some time. It came to a head in the early hours of the morning, this place was listed as our Emergency Vet. Nothing really prepares you for this, but 100% want to recommend here and the Vet lady too, think her name was Jennifer, sorry if wrong. My husband and my adult son were present. Our situation was properly checked and I will be grateful for the respect and dignity given to our precious dog. Out dog Molly was put on a sheepskin rug ultimately and it was a gradual process with time given for us to say goodbye. Thank you so much for making this difficult process as easy as possible. We are missing her so much but know it was her time, think dogs indicate this to us prior to leaving, they are such a loyal precious creature.

Fantastic experience: Very friendly atmosphere for pets and people. Reception well managed and run smoothly. Vets and assistants/ nursing staff were great, with the consultation being an in-depth interview about our cat's health, condition, visible symptoms, behavioural changes and eating pattern. Our cat showed no anxiety while being held or handled, which is a good sign of trust.

Fantastic experience: My beautiful furbabyt, Nala, was admitted for tests, following worrying results from local vets. She was in 4 days, and allowed home, following tests and treatment. She was looked after incredibly well, and I was kept informed throughout, in a professional and empathetic manner. She has a life limiting condition, but I know the Small Animal Hospital will support Nala and her family, when further difficulties arise. A special mention to George, who was the main contact and vet involved in her care.

The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital

Thank you for your lovely words. All the best to you and Nala.

Fantastic experience: Great service. My cat was neutered here and she was well looked after. Upon collection I was well informed of the after care. Very happy I chose this veterinary practice.

Fantastic experience: Could not have been more helpful. Had to check my little 13 years old cat in for radiology treatment for hyperthyroidism for a fortnight. The staff here are brilliant, veterinarian Jade especially. Jade and her two female students explained everything in full and coached all our questions brilliantly. They are very friendly but professional and understand you are stressed because you are handling over a sick, beloved, pet. The hospital was very clean with lovely toilets and vending machines which we appreciated as we had travelled almost 200 miles without a break. Can't wait to get my little girl home though.

Fantastic experience: The 5 stars are for the medical staff that cared for my border collie they were wonderful kept us informed about his progress .its a shame that the administration staff let them down I got a phone call from then stating that I had to login to my insurance company and immediately start acclaim as I its been a few weeks since my dog was discharged the message was insinuating that I hadn't bothered to do it when infact I filled a claim form in at the hospital before my dog was discharged and despite me contacting them asking on the progress of my claim I still received this voice message with the tone that I wasn't or hadn't bothered angry was mild to how I felt ridiculous

Hannah McIvor Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: The clinical services are excellent; especially the chronic pain clinic which extended my girls life, The insurance procedure is chaotic and shambolic at best - incorrect allocations of payments, inability to process claims in a timely manner despite claims forms being submitted at every visit, basic mathematical errors, and then having the cheek to tell me that I had to pay for claims that had already been paid out by the insurance company due to the vet schools ineptitude. An absolute disgrace, and they have made no attempt to respond to my requests and complaints, or investigate. Would not use again, there are plenty of alternative referral centres available in the central belt.

Fantastic experience: Kind and caring vets late at night. Amy was given a thorough check by 2 vets and is back to normal. Considering the time of night it was a very reasonable charge. Thanks to the vets.

Elaine Mc stay Posted on Google 3 years ago

Negative experience: i highly respect the staff here, my wee dog was taken in very poorly with a slipt disk, was quoted 3.000 for mri and op, then she took a blood clot, wanted to do another mri, i could not afford but got another op, she was in 16 nights, got her home took her to water therapy and laser treatments to help her, which was 100.00 per week, the hospital bill was 7,000 to which am still paying and less than a year my girl took the same thing again, and sadly is no longer here, poor soul went through all that for nothing she never walked properly after all the treatment

Fantastic experience: We brought our little English Cocker spaniel Skye in as a emergency on 18th April. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel at ease by Lauren, the receptionist on duty. We were stressed after travelling by ferry and then by car for two hours, and so worried about our dog.We were quickly seen by a lovely gentle vet, Katy, and she put Skye at ease. Then she was handed over to Vet Anais, who would go on to diagnose, then treat Skye for the next 7 days. We cannot thank Anais enough for her kindness, compassion, and sklil. We received daily phone calls from her, updating us, and explaining everything that was being done to help save Skye. We now have her home with us, recovering. We aso want to thank Vet Anna who discharged Skye, and was so kind and answered all our questions. We feel very lucky that our own amazing vet where we live knew something was seriously wrong with our dog and referred her to this amazing hospital. Thank you to all the staff x

Martin Mcdonald Posted on Google 3 years ago

Jim Adam Posted on Google 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Staff were great pity its all about money £190 out of hours consultation fee seems alot but great vets

ian barton Posted on Google 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: I had my Kali up to the out of hours service as she was being sick and whining as if in pain, taken straight away and kept up to date while we were waiting for her. They sent a report through to my own vet which was there in the morning for us when we called as promised. In a worrying time for us they were friendly and reliable and offered lots of reassurance. Its never an easy call to decide to go there but it's absolutely worth it to have the piece of mind that my dog will be ok, I would certainly recommend that anyone worrying about a pet after hours contacts them, even just for reassurance.

Fantastic experience: I cannot thank the Angels that work in here enough , they saved our boy Munro’s life after he ate something and was poisoned. Munro was at death’s door when we had to bring him here and with the compassion, love and training they saved his life . Munro can now be a normal Golden cocker spaniel again . Thank you all so much . The Barclay Family

Fantastic experience: Staff and students here were amazing help when I had to bring my dog, Angus, in after he was attacked by an off lead lab. He's healing up well now and we're incredibly grateful to everyone there. Staff explained everything to us clearly, and were friendly and helpful throughout.

Fantastic experience: Myself and my family would like to say a huge thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the staff at Glasgow University Vet School Small Animal Hospital for saving my fur babies life. Ted became really unwell very quickly with lethargy, off his food and struggling to breathe. He collapsed in the house resulting in me contacting my vet who very quickly came out to see Ted. They took him to the surgery to do blood tests and various other procedures but we were told the devastating news that he had something called IMHA, a condition where his own immune system starts attacking his red blood cells causing severe anaemia, his liver leaking bile into his system and very pale gums. We were told that it would be touch and go for the next few hours as they had to give him steroids and a blood transfusion and hope this would help. Well the next week has been the longest week of my life wondering if he would pull through and waiting for the morning phone call from the hospital for an update on his condition. With the expertise and care of the hospital staff ted improved every day and had blood taken yesterday to see if his red blood cells were starting to regenerate and I’m over the moon that they are nearly at the normal level. I’m sorry for the long post but I want pet owners to be aware of this life treating disease and with this information hope to save some other dogs that could be showing signs of this disease. Thank you again to every single member of the internal medicine department who were involved with the care of ted. You are all wonderful people. Xx
