Negative experience: Atrocious service. Arrived at 11.10 for a 11.20 appointment. Spent 10 mins with vet and was charged £118 consultation fees. Left at 12.25. Markup on drug prescriptions is 200-250%. Don’t go here. Gets worse, my dog was wrongly diagnosed and treated for arthritis, I paid over £600 for blood tests which they botched. When asked to return for bloods they said the visit would be free of charge and my dog would be given a quick check up. Then charged a full consultation fee of £65 because my dog “had seen a vet”. I refused to pay and was immediately referred to collections for what I assume is court action. My boys are now registered with another vet and the diagnosis and treatment, care and attention they receive is exactly what you expect for your beloved pets. Go to happy paws in Aberdare
Fantastic experience: Amazing team at this local vets they handle all animals with such care and attention. I’ve always been really happy with their level of service and honestly can’t fault them. They’ve been part of the community for years and have even expanded, which is well deserved. Truly a vets you can trust.

Negative experience: Took my 2 kittens to be neutered and they’ve done a botch job on the 1 kitten and now want to charge me to sort it out after it’s their mistake… avoid these amateurish charlatans at all costs

Negative experience: I've recently walked away after discovering a 125% markup on emergency medication and an ownership structure that would make Larry Fink jealous. It's perfectly ok to make money, but £60 for a ten-minute consultation should cover most of the bills and the rest feels like a choice about whether you are there to treat animals or to extract as much money as possible from desperate people. The continuous insistence to neuter for no good reason now makes sense to me. One of the Directors has 407 appointments. This strategy makes sense in many sectors, but this is where desperate people come and have no choice but to pay. I can't in good conscience ever give this business another penny.

Fantastic experience: I always find service here very professional, the vet my cat sees is Rob, he was excellent in sorting my cats diebetic problems out, also the reception staff are always very friendly and helpful.

Fantastic experience: I have always had excellent care at Summerhill, my beautiful American bulldog, came to the end of her fantastic long life 2 weeks ago, and they couldn't have been better helping her go peacefully and with love.
Positive experience: The customer facing area is in desperate need of repair, paint, and a general uplift. Went into the consultation room, looked around, the wood was worn, and the paint was coming off. I was not given the impression of hygiene nor felt they were trying to give a good impression. On a positive note, the staff were very polite and super friendly. The building was letting them down a lot. On another positive note, the vet said they were having an extension. fingers crossed they uplift the existing building.

Fantastic experience: From the staff on reception to the Vets that we’ve seen, the care and service has been outstanding. A huge thank you to Kieran, Allison, Jenny, Robyn and Kate for getting Coco on the road to recovery after she has been so poorly, and putting a robust treatment plan in place. We also had to visit urgently with Puggle today, and we were accommodated quickly, she was thoroughly checked over and treated. Thank you Summerhill ❤️

Fantastic experience: Absolutely lovely and reassuring visit to this surgery for our first visit. The staff have genuine interest and warmth to customers and the pets visiting. Their whole demeanour is really obvious that they genuinely love animals. The high standard of knowledge and expertise is immediately clear which was very reassuring. The site had onside parking which was a big bonus, the inside clinic was compact but well orientated/laid out. There was alot of useful information to hand. They have alot of experience with so many different animals/pets that you should feel reassured using this clinic for advice and treatment. Very big thank you to the 2 vets (male and female) we seen, and also to Kieran who was really helpful and warming.

Fantastic experience: The staff at Summerhill were lovely. Especially Fiona, who is amazing, my dog finds visiting the vet stressful but Fiona was great with her and reassured us both and made the whole experience so much better. Positive experience: I only visit this practice because Jean morris is the best ever vet, unfortunately there are now new greedy practice owners and the prices have gone sky high. If it wasn't for the said vet this place would go down hill faster than it already is.

We are sorry to hear that you have not been 100% satisfied with our pricing structure as we do try to provide costings in advance where possible. We frequently carry out market research and do feel our prices are very competitive within the veterinary industry and we are sorry that you have not felt this at your latest visit.
Negative experience: Ultimately made a complaint to the RCVS as I was told by the clinical director (Caroline Smith) that Layla no longer worked here, so my concerns couldn’t be investigated. Gave my dog the wrong medication, you would think the CAT on the front of the packet would’ve been indication enough ? Apparently not. Returned the pack, giggling receptionist. It’s not a funny or appropriate response when you’ve driven half way across Newport, paying hundreds of pounds for a consultation and given the wrong medication for someone to find it funny. What if I’d not noticed and given it to my pet? You’ve caused serious injury to pets doing this, haven’t you? Then charged the client to get the pet well again. Didn’t just happen once either. I have an email from Caroline Smith acknowledging this happened and that they’ve put further measures in place to prevent it happening again. What were they then? From the last few, recent reviews I see Layla is still there and the wrong medication is still being given! I had two complaints:- Treated my dog for YEARS for a condition he never had, (kidney disease) that they didn’t have the necessary tests to monitor, by their own admittance backed up by another surgery, then asked me why I was treating him for it. They even mentioned kidney transplants and dialysis. It’s not even performed in the U.K for a start, but I didn’t know that at the time. Laughable really, if it wasn’t for resulting in a dog who constantly vomited (which they also made money off). I was told to persevere until one day I’d had enough, switched to Forthglade dinners and just like that he stopped being sick. Their reasoning? Well a test a few years back showed a high level of X-so we decided it was in his best interests to keep testing. I later found the readings could have been caused by the painkillers he was on the same time. I thought my dog was dying. He was subjected to constant bloods, urine samples, blood pressure monitoring. Eventually a nurse suggested I stop as my dog was agitated by the testing. All for nothing. He’s 13.5 now and still no kidney disease. To make a procedure cheaper /quicker (ear flush) they offered to drop anaesthetic (acknowledging my pet would be in pain) but saying it could be done. Barbaric. Having left my dog in their care for the flush I drove back, pulled him out and went to elsewhere -£75 steroids plus consultation. Not the £1,000 mri Summerhill wanted to perform in addition to the ear flush but said “it might not show anything”. So what was the point then? Always the most expensive treatment offered first, with a wishy washy explanation as to why it’s needed. They’ve also never mentioned kidney disease. The good vets have escaped this poor excuse of a practice. Since Mrs Morris left and hedge funders hold control its reputation has hit rock bottom. I’d be embarrassed to work here, “please contact the surgery with any issues” basically so we can lie to you, issue an apology and carry on providing a shocking service time and time again. “sorry that you are dissatisfied with any aspect of our services. We would ask that any client with concerns relating to the treatment of their pet to contact us directly.” What a joke. Do better Summerhill. You are negligent and mismanaged at best, liars at worst and you should be shutdown for good.
Negative experience: First time I went to visit them with my cat and the issue he had and asked just for some antiseptic drops they told me I need to book an appointment. The receptionist was sharp and rude. Ok, I did that. Paid £102. They gave me some liquid to put in his food, which did absolutely nothing, after 2 weeks it infected the area again. I called them as I’ve been advised if the liquid will not help they will prescribe antibiotics. They told me on the phone that they will not issue antibiotics as it passed 4 days now. First, I never been advised about the 4 days. Secondly, now I have to spend another £65 plus meds on the appointment? This is absolutely ridiculous. If you go and service your car or make an appointment with anyone and they charge to see you, they won’t charge again for the same issue that wasn’t resolved last time. Service is absolutely rubbish. The actual Vet specialist was very nice and polite. But customer service there is lacking some basics seriously. Let’s pay every time £65 to visit them if they can’t do their job properly and diagnose the pure animal with an issue at the first appointment. Absolutely ridiculous!
Negative experience: I went to Summerhill vets on Saturday. The vet couldn’t have been less interested! She rushed me out of the room after barely 5 minutes! Despite my cat having a nasty ear abscess she did not administer antibiotics or steroid injections there and then and said it was my job to do that at home. After a cursory clean of his ear and medication to take home I was charged £175!! £65 just for the consultation! The receptionist gave me the wrong medication and I had to return to the surgery for the correct prescription!! All in all it was a pathetic experience and I will not be returning. Summerhill vets are only interested in taking your money and not in the pets or their owners. Stay away!!!

Negative experience: BE WARNED TO ALL OWNERS ABOUT PET INSURANCE AND SUMMEHILL ! The usual procedure with pet insurance and summerhill is that if your animal treatment in under £500 you pay upfront and if its over £500 summerhill will deal with the insurance claim directly to your insurers. I have been going to summerhill for many year and never have had a problem. My dog is due for insurance renewal and I would like to change it.I rang summerhill today to ask what pet insurance they accept (as they didn't accept all animaL insurance company's). The lady I spoke to said it does not matter what pet insurance i pick ,as they do not claim to them directly anymore, all pet costs will need to be paid upfront to summerhill by the owner. I did ask hypothetical what if my animal needed a emergency £6000 operation and I couldn't get the funds straight away, what would i do? The lady reply was "well you would need to just get a loan or ask your family". The lady went on further to say that "it's a bill you wouldnt expect for a service to be done before you pay it"! I was rather taken back toward her stinking attitude and her tone. I am currently signing up to a new independent vets. I wanted to pre-warn all other owners who are signed up to summerhill.if you do your research there are still some independent vets that do still take pet insurance. To Summerhill - we are not all fortunate to just get a loan or have family members to ask for money,hence why alot of pet owners pay for pet insurance.
Fantastic experience: Was booked in for a same day appointment and seen promptly. Vet was very kind and caring and answered all my questions. Thank you. Been back twice since my first review with both my dogs. Two more great experiences. One of my dogs is a chow chow who has been judged at vets before, as typical to his breed he isn't a fan of strangers touching him, however there was no judgement at this practice making the whole process a lot easier for both me and my dog. We both felt comfortable and felt the vet was very knowledgeable and understanding.
Fantastic experience: Layla the vet was absolutely amazing. Although my visit had a very sad outcome, I was given as much time as I needed to make a difficult decision. I was taken to a quiet room where I could spend some time with Clemmy before she crossed the rainbow bridge. Layla showed the utmost compassion and treated Clemmy with such dignity, ensuring she felt no pain and comforting her through her final journey. I was given as much time as I needed to say my final goodbye. I cannot recommend this practice group highly enough. I have used them for all of my floofs

Fantastic experience: Summerhill vets are always very helpful and caring. I have always been treated with kindness and respect. Bella my Bichon has been with the practice for 12 years. Every time we have visited the help support we have received has always been second to non. I totally recommend this vet to anyone looking to visit
Negative experience: Receptionists helpful and friendly at this practice. My experience with the vets however is very different. The 2 younger vets I have seen recently just seemed to want to give me a large bill. The thurd vet an older, experienced vet was very good and I could tell was committed to the welfare of my pet. Unfortunately he is not the vet I see every time. Previously, I was charged 100.00 for an emergency appointment but we were just kept in the waiting room for over 20 minutes, while my cat was in pain and dying. The vet gave him a cursory examination and spent most of her time with her back to me, my son and our pet as she put together a draft bill on her computer for 900 to 1100.00 You are encouraged to join pet health care plan and told it can offer a reduction on medications and treatment, not from the nearly 400.00 bill I was given when my cat was put down or the 114.00 I was billed to pay for antibiotics, despite my cat having a viral infection.
Negative experience: STAY WELL CLEAR OF THIS VETS!!! I have a 10month old bulldog who had cherry eye so summer hill carried out the operation to put her third eyelid back into place, the surgery went well. Operation cost £1300 All her check ups was OK according to these vets but then suddenly we noticed her eye wasn't healing properly and it had a lot of discharge so made an appointment to get it check. The nurse who seen us gave us more eye drops and told us to come back in a week. During that week the eye drops made her eye 10x worse so I stopped giving them. I then took her to her next appointment with jenny who done the eye surgery and she told me that there was an ulcer on her eye gave us more drops which cost another £103 and that she would need to see a eye specialist which would cost another £245 for a consultation. We then seen the eye specialist Brian Patterson who was very good and told us that she had a progressive corneal ulcer which resulted in her losing her eye completely. We feel if the ulcer would have been caught sooner our poor family pet would still have her eye!!!! DO NOT GIVE THIS VETS YOUR MONEY ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MONEY NOT YOUR PET!!
Fantastic experience: Very good vets. They have plenty of parking space and can see pets outside for some minor visits. Quick to answer calls and the staff are always friendly. Both our pets are registered here and they have always got best care

Negative experience: Extortionate prices. £59 for 10 min appointment. £144 full price including meds and consultation. Wasn't overly impressed with staff. We were 10 mins late and were told we may not be seem. This was following a call from them to alter the initial time. We re arranged our plans to fit in and were held up in traffic on our way. When sharing this info, the receptionist simply gave me the eye!
Fantastic experience: Great staff, nice clean, tidy and spacious reception area. Specialist vet very caring to our dog and obviously professional and friendly. Very clear and precise with information about the eye operation our dog would be having done on Mon 15.4.24.
Positive experience: I wouldn't use these vets after a couple of bad experiences going back about 11 years ago and again maybe 7 years ago. It may have changed ownership since then? I don't really have any interest in finding out. I was really only enquiring about the cost of kitten vaccinations as it's a set price and local.
Negative experience: Extremely frustrated my husband is really struggling to get to the vets in time while hes an unpaid carer for me and hes looking after our 1 year old full time and working and he's autistic. Just a few minutes late because he needed to bringing my daughter down from a nap in time so shes tired and they've left us without flea protection all weekend which is very serious for both or health conditions and now hes 2 minutes late today and they've done it again. Pretty disgusted. We can weigh them all you need to do is dispense it. Don't buy flea treatment through them because you'll never be able to book an appointment and if your a minute late your family are penalised. It shouldn't need an appointment for flea treatment it just needs a request. Shocking
Negative experience: I have been with summerhill vets for years once very attentative and caring but now I can only discibe them as liars for the simple fact that they charged me 288 pound for an injection in the nose that my dog never had further and foremost I had a call from the manager this morning saying this was a mistake on the person seeing to my dog it wasn't a mistake it was a bare faced lie and that's the reason I'm changing vets because summerhill vets can no longer be trusted like they used to be when misses Morris was in charge shame on you

Fantastic experience: I have made a review previously, but as my experience today needs to be updated, I wanted to share my thoughts! This is a brilliant veterinary practice! My cat is afraid of dogs, and put me in a separate waiting room. They put a towel over the cat box with a herbal substance, which calmed my cat down. They completed what they needed to do, and the herbal liquid kept her calm and they didn't have an angry cat!! They were able to do what they wanted to do, and quickly. The staff are lovely, and the vet I spoke too was brilliant! I cannot praise them enough!!!

Negative experience: Extremely bad service from the vet. My dog was poorly and needed antibiotics. The vet sent her away with something she couldn't take, misdiagnosed her. We had to then go to our of hours vets the next morning, they saw she needed something gave her the correct drugs and she got better. Summer hill denied they were at fault saying it was my dogs fault she declined. I would never recommend this vets, it was much better with Mrs Morris. Avoid at all costs.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic veterinary practice, treated our pet with care, compassion and respect at the end of her life. Monica was so kind, taking a footprint of our pet for us to keep.
Fantastic experience: I cannot thank the staff at Summerhill enough for their kindness and compassion when I recently had to bring my beloved elderly cat Tilly in to be put to sleep. The vet who carried out the euthanasia was very kind and gave us as much time as we needed to say goodbye to Tilly, and was so considerate of her comfort right up to the end. The reception staff were lovely too, and when I went back to collect Tilly's ashes they had taken some pawprints from her prior to cremation, as well as a clipping of her fur which was beautifully presented in a little decorated bottle. I couldn't have asked for a better service during such a sad time - thank you Summerhill
Positive experience: Lovely little vets,knowledgeable vets,car park is a bit of a mountain to climb,disabled parking by entrance,there is disabled access but it's up a step,main door is broken (floor broken) friendly staff,cat only waiting area and cat only Wednesday!! Friendly receptionist....

Negative experience: If I could give under a 0 I would charged me £55 just to stare at my dog.they are trained to give you the highest offer for test or treatment but when you say your leaving they go to the next stage to offer you another test it’s just a scam up there will never take any of my pets there again

Positive experience: The vets are brilliant. The rules around how u can get a further flea treatment, even when you are down to your last pippett, can be frustrating . The worst bit to this veterinary practice is exiting back on to the road from the vets car park, u are unable to see if there is any oncoming traffic , anxiety levels peak and you take your life in your hands and hope nothing goes into you as you exit. ☹️

Negative experience: Vets are pretty good, and quite friendly staff, though, they keep inflating prices on a monthly (not yearly) basis. Tablets that used to cost £15, now £85...complete rip off. With no prior warning! I even gave it to my dog, not the vet... Yet paying for their time to print the label. Sadly I don't think I'll be using them again, as the prices they're charging in comparison to some, not all, other local vets is extortionate. I know owning a pet is expensive, however at these prices, it's little wonder the rehoming centres are overflowing. Unfortunately Summerhill group keep taking over all the independent vets. Not being ripped off any more!
Fantastic experience: The staff at summerhill from the receptionists to the Vets are always so caring and kind! I have been with them for years and wouldn't go anywhere else.
Negative experience: North Wales vs South, visited this vets as on holiday seeing parents in the south my dog had a issue with his tummy, spoke to my vets simple injection to get him sick £70, ended up being charged here £250 and not warned of costs, just disappointed with the expense, staff were friendly and vet, but level of charging for profit was both disappointing and concerning in these challenging times, really need to be more clear on what charging and why and communicate better.
Fantastic experience: Would highly recommend this vets. We took our 8 week old puppy for first vaccine, and health check. Was really Impressed with the vet she was amazing with our pup and gave us loads of information, very friendly staff and very clean. I found this vet by being recommended to me by a friend and I'm really happy we found them.

Positive experience: So, it's my first time having a cat which means that this is also my first vet. Keep that in mind. Besides somehow getting the gender of a +- 9 week old kitten wrong, they've done nothing out of the ordinary. I do quite like the pet plan they have which saves you a whole lot of hassle and money to ensure your pet remains in good health, parasite- and flea free. The waiting room gets VERY loud VERY easily with all the staff present and the fact it echoes more than an empty museum so that's something to keep in mind both for yourself & your animal. Lastly, I want to point out that they don't give kittens appropriate treats. This concerned me enormously since adult cat food is nutritionally quite different, just like with humans. I bring my own. I'm having monthly appointments so I will try to keep this review up-to-date.
Fantastic experience: Excellent lovely clean waiting area no smell at all separate sitting space for cats on a weds and lots of posters with usefully advice plus a TV screen with advice going on no sound obviously with tips on plants etc. Not good for cats or dogs the air con was much appreciated aswell as it was a very hot day in June the vet she was lovely and gave misha a booster vaccine and treats for positive reinforcement I thought was a very good idea misha also had her nails clipped all in all very excellent not a long wait either very pleased
Fantastic experience: Lovely vets. Very caring about the animals. Looking after my dogs well. Especially Maggies haematoma in her ear. Almost back to normal now.

Fantastic experience: The staff were absolutely lovely after I had to say an emotional goodbye to my dog. Vet Robyn was so caring of Jack he couldn't have had a better end of life. Today when I collected his ashes, the nurse who handed them over, did it so sympathetically that it made me feel Jack was special (and not just a routine task). Thank you so much Summerhill, you have made an emotional time bearable.
Fantastic experience: Thanks to these vets, they saw Lizzie straightaway, gave her a 50/50 chance of survival. 1 jab and a few tablets later, she is eating again and is so much better. These vets are very caring, very professional, and we are so grateful that they saw Lizzie so soon. Thankyou x

Negative experience: £53.50 for a less than 5 minute consultation is absolutely ridiculous. I wasn’t made aware by either the vet or the receptionist the cost of a consultation for my pet rabbit. The vet barely looked at my rabbit nor gave any proper advice. I would of found more help just from Google. I am now in debt with the £53.50 and for extra charges of late payements and an added fee of getting the debt collectors involved so well into £100 now. Summer Hill vets did not ring me up to tell me I owed them £53.50 all they did was send 3 letters to an address I no longer reside in which they knew about as I spoke to a receptionist about the change of address. So I have been clueless about this debt until recently I have been getting calls from the DSL claiming I owe them money. I had to contact Summer Hill vets to ask about this and which they told me about the 3 letters they sent and the extra fees and that they cannot discuss anything further with me. I will not be using this vets ever again, and if you don’t want to pay extortionate prices for a consultation fee I suggest to look elsewhere.
Positive experience: The parking is a little tricky with the walking down of the steap slope during the rain and icy weather. The inside needs a little updating. The more commercial vets are bright, clean, and welcoming... they're also cheaper. This is our closest vet, and as our cats don't like travelling, we're willing to pay a little more.
Fantastic experience: I really like these guys. Very straightforward team that take on the task at hand and try to give a variety of practical suggestions. Was recommended I go to them by the group we adopted from and would certainly do likewise if asked.

Positive experience: While it's never nice to need to have your pet checked at short notice, staff were brilliant and able to book us in to be looked at very soon after we arrived. The atmosphere was pleasant and the waiting area totally sufficient. Checks and advice were thorough and clear.

Fantastic experience: We couldn’t get an appointment at our usual vet and managed to get an appointment for Summerhill, and I am glad we did. Our extremely well loved Labrador was deteriorating quickly and sadly we had to take the decision to euthanasise her, which if you have a dog you see as a family member you will appreciate is absolutely devastating , it really is like losing a child. Even though the circumstances were awful the staff and vet where incredible throughout and we greatly appreciate, the staff and especially the vet who really understood what we were going through. I just want to thank them for their compassion and showing me that Vets can be more than just a business, but it can also be a place of compassion

Negative experience: I am so cross and upset today about the shabby treatment received from your receptionist. I was told that my dog and her sister(belonging to my son) could be registered with summerhill vets. An appointment was made for vaccinations and my son had to ring and register her. My daughter in law rang at 6pm as arranged and was told very abruptly that they were not taken on dogs as they were short of vets. I rang back to explain the conversation I had with a male nurse in the afternoon but was also told that they were not taking her on. It was the same receptionist who had spoken to my daughter. She is extremely rude and didn’t want to engage in conversation in fact I queried was she still there as the line was silent.I do hope the conversation was recorded.I cancelled my pet plan with the previous vet because I believed we were registered with you.our dogs do not have a vet now. My previous dog was with you for 17 years and my parents and sister also used Summerhill for their dogs, that was with Mrs Morris . Loyalty does not seem to count today. All I can say I am extremely upset today.

They always go the extra mile to help and all our pets love them. Thank you so much for all you do fir us, we really appreciate it. We want to thank everyone who was there with us yesterday as we had to say a final goodbye to our furbaby Mylo, everyone was so helpful and kept us fully informed of everything. Mylo is now at peace with no more pain. THANK YOU all for your patience and helping us through a very difficult and heartbreaking time .
