Fantastic experience: Absolutely can't fault the fantastic service my daughter and I recently received when our dog Lexi took poorly. They tried their very best to help her but alas she was in an awful lot of pain and discomfort. She was an old girl but we absolutely adored her. We couldn't watch her suffer anymore and made the extremely difficult decision to let her cross the rainbow bridge. We thank you for making her as comfortable as possible during her stay and thank you for letting us have our final moments with her in the best way possible. We are broken hearted, but we know we made the best decision for Lexi

Negative experience: Paid full price for a blood test for my cat that’s eating loads but constantly losing weight. Bloods normal so they say and just told me to keep an eye on her ! No other option for other tests even tho I pay with no discount. Absolute joke of a place.

Fantastic experience: We sadly had my old boy put to sleep today, But the vet we had made it a much easier and peaceful experience. My dog meant so much to me..And it was extremely hard seeing him go. But I couldn't fault the vets at all. The service was absolutely fabulous, And thank you for handling my boy so greatly. :)

Fantastic experience: The staff, the vets are amazing. My dad is on a Low pension happy to pay. I will always give a donation. I can’t thank them enough especially Tom and the team for saving my dad’s kittens life and we just turned up. I wish they would take all customers at full price too as I would take my pets there as the team are all for the animals welfare. Vet practices everywhere should have the same character as this fabulous team. My donations for my dad’s cats will go directly to this practice. Please donate directly by popping in as this is for this branch of the PDSA only. Thanks to all of the team you are all fabulous. Gray, Nova and Charlie thank you for their superb treatment x

Negative experience: An Emergency Turned Away Absolutely devastated. My 12-year-old indoor cat, Smudge, fell suddenly ill — 4 days now, vomiting frothy discoloured bile, not eating, not drinking, lethargic, hiding. Classic signs of something serious. Cowgate PDSA flat-out refused to even assess her. No triage. No waiting list. No advice. Just "we're not accepting new patients" and a curt hang-up after telling me to “go private.” I understand staff shortages. I don’t understand abandoning sick animals. You’re the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals — the pet equivalent of the NHS. And yet you turned your back on a clearly suffering animal. Smudge has never needed you in 12 years, and the one time she did, you weren’t there. Disgusted. Heartbroken. And if this is how you operate under pressure, your mission statement means nowt. Expect a complaint to the Charity Commission!

Negative experience: Minus stars. Can't get a cat in because they aren't able to do their jobs properly. They don't even care if it's life threatening and they can die hope no one donates to this disgraceful so called charity

Julie Richardson Posted on Google 11 months ago

Fantastic experience: I can't fault the help and support from everyone at the PDSA. They made me and Millie feel reassured and at ease through out the whole process. So helpful with everything. Millie had a water infection, and they were very quick with diagnosis and prompt with antibiotics. I would recommend taking a water sample with you as that really speeds everything up. Always leave a donation as it's so important with the work they do.

Negative experience: PLEASE READ! I would give them 0 stars if i could.A absolutely awful experience for myself and my poorly dog.AVOID! My dog was rushed in and passed around the Newcastle & Gateshead branch due to her not passing urine. In this review I will only be leaving feedback for the Newcastle branch, I will be leaving a separate one for the gateshead branch but the whole company is an utter joke. Due to my dog not passing urine and after many ultrasounds and x-rays they told me to put my dog to sleep. Besides her not urinating correctly, my dog is a happy, healthy and perfect pooch. My first bad encounter was myself being told that she was going in for surgery (twice) both times when i went to collect her she had not been in for surgery yet during the consultation this was agreed upon. (don’t get me wrong im thankful she didn’t but why say this is definite if it’s not going to happen). They told me on the first consultation that their is no bladder stones in her bladder but one may have blocked her urethra hence her not urinating correct to. they ‘resolved’ this by pushing the suspected stone back into her bladder and that her special urinary food would just dissolve this. They said if she didn’t continue to pass urine to bring her straight back in. 2 days later she was struggling again so off we went back to the PDSA gateshead branch. On her second visit they had to drain her bladder via injection at the gateshead branch & I received a call to go pick her up to transport her to newcastle to go in for surgery due to her ‘bladder stones’ (which she didn’t even have). I was told that i had to pay £400 upfront before her surgery (which is fine and understandable). I received a phone call from them later that evening which they said that they don’t know what the problem is and that I needed to put her to sleep. When i asked to collect my dog the reply I got from the vet was ‘You want to collect her? She is heavily sedated you know?’ in a very sassy, surprised tone of voice. I was not happy about this and I’m still not happy. When i collected my baby the nurse then told me that I had 2 options. To take her elsewhere because they ‘don’t have the correct facilities’ or to put her to sleep. As a person who is on benefits and qualify for the low cost service I have spent just under £1,000 between newcastle and gateshead PDSA to get no further forwards. Due to her not having surgery I asked if I owed them anything and the nurse replied with ‘oh you’re in credit, you can either leave it on or go to reception and get your refund’. I went to the reception to get the refund as I had to take her private and needed a refund. The receptionist said unfortunately she said she wasn’t able to issue a refund as she ‘wasn’t on for this’ and that I would have to come back on Monday (It was friday) to get my refund. how stupid to have someone on the checkout who can’t issue refunds? I needed this money to pay to a private vet to save her life. I couldn’t wait til Monday but unfortunately she couldn’t do anything about this. i’m appalled by the situation. I did tell the receptionist that I’ve had to travel for 40 minutes to come here and that I can’t keep traveling backwards and forwards as it’s costing me money but quite frankly she just didn’t care and just kept repeating that she ‘can’t do anything’. This was nearly 2 weeks ago and i’m still waiting for my refund. Overall, the PDSA are awful and to be honest they just want to put any animal to sleep. I can tell you now I will never be taking my baby girl back here. I would rather be in debt and make sure she’s alive. I would honestly rather eat shards of glass than return to this PDSA. I would highly not recommend. I know so many people who have had similar encounters with this PDSA. AVOID!!!! I had an even worse experience at the gateshead branch but I will leave that under their section. After 5K later between the PDSA and private turns out she has a serious untreated UTI. This could have all been prevented if they done their job correctly & took a urine test as a first point of call!

Negative experience: Won't even see my dog as I live in Northumberland Absolutely disgusted in them They will never receive another donation from me The adverts are lies they don't care for all pets

Damn Girl Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Amazing place and amazing people mostly. Not a big fan of one of the vet’s attitude. She got a cardboard box that wasn’t empty to give to us so we could take our dying boy home after the injection. We refused and the other vets saved his life and continue to give him amazing care when he needs it. Heroes!

Positive experience: Although the pdsa is a fantastic charity an I've always donated money for the help. But this time I'm unhappy about the treatment my dog has recieved I've been back an forth 4 times now an if they'd stitched my dogs paw in the first visit my dog would most definitely be on the mend now. But he's still suffering an in tremendous pain an the wound is open to infection an I really can't see my dog healing anytime soon not happy at all

David Dowson Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Told me word for word “your dog will die if it doesn’t get it surgery in 12 hrs” and said it’s not and emergency because my dog is still breathing, so I said so when my dog is dead then it’s an emergency and the women said “yes”, terrible service in all honesty they only tried to make me feel liek it was my own fault my dog was in its current condition ( my dog need a c section)

MARTIN RIVERS Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: I've used this service as I'm unemployed disabled and and Autistic, found pdsa vets very caring and professional. They really love their job and animal clients The only issue is you have to wait ages for an appointment and when you do get one you are ever seen on time. All in all though a great organisation

Fantastic experience: Exceptional care from front desk to vets and assistants alike. Simply tremendous care and empathy from all

Tracy Schollar Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: These vets care about the animals. Which is so different to the private vet's who just managed your animals ailments instead of trying to cure it. Thank you to the whole team at Cowgate. I would ask everyone waiting, to please stop moaning and completing at whose appointments been waiting the longest. Be kind and give what you can. Don't pull up in your BMW and chuck them change. Please support this charity and help those who's animals are suffering.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic service. I have a little 5 month old cat called mango and my 7 year old daughter decided to tie an elastic band round his tail the staff got him in asap and took it off within minutes. They were absolutely amazing and gave him antibiotics/painkillers too.

shahan ullah Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: I paid £20 suggested donation for my 'free' dog (I have two registered, the other is paid no matter what) and when I realised I had no wallet with me, and only brought the suggested £20 fee that PDSA had called prior to advise me, I was told I'd have to go home and collect more cash before taking the medication as it needed paying for (I'm 63 and live quite a way away) - so despite paying £20 donation, which I wouldn't have had I realised there were more charges, I was refused the medication with option of donating the difference at home & left to take my sick dog home They overcharge people on low-incomes (who can't afford a vets hence being here) for medicines/treatments that are often just human form. Example: will charge £7 for infant Calpol you can buy for £2. Site seems to state free vet for benefit recipients but actually still trying to emotionally blackmail you into paying. Staff Rude when I questioned this and belittling Will complain to charities commission and MP. Will not take my pets back here, they prey on the vulnerable

Joe Gilchrist Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: The staff here are amazing and the care they give the animals is great! Thank you!

william roberts Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Brilliant vets couldn't do enough to help my dog who had broke his leg

Rachel Ayre Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: The treatment of my rabbit Tiggy at the PDSA was a disgrace, he was sent home with a gaping hole in his neck with no medication as the vet had wanted to put him to sleep as he had an abscess from being bitten in the garden. He's fine now luckily, but no thanks to them.

George Robertson Posted on Google 2 years ago

Positive experience: My daughters dog has an infection in his gums. The staff apparently don't treat them for this. She has to go private, very costly. She described the symptoms over the phone & sent pics of the area on the dog. Nothing was done, needless journey & dog suffers longer. Till she can afford a vet. My thinking is PDSA could have informed her before giving this appointment. Complete waste of 75 mins time, very angry.

323 v6 Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: System for getting appointments is terrible, I was told my eligibility had ran out when it hadn’t, then said I’d get a call back in 5 days, knowing fine well I wouldn’t get one, cos I didn’t go ‘online’ they know I can’t use internet, due to dyslexia, then wouldn’t even let me complain to a manager, my dogs been very poorly for 2 weeks now, not even any advice??? I will never volunteer to work for PDSA ever again!!! Sick of the national centre and local branch blaming each other ? I wager many sick animals have suffered needlessly due to this ridiculous system, that never works !!! I will be complaining

Lerosh Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: They were there when we needed them,,but it's so hard to make appointments now,,or to register a new animal,,but when my old dog needed help on the worst times ,they were in my case ,helped me more than the on street vets, and for what we could afford ,,

Fantastic experience: The staff are lovely and the vets are really thorough. Yes you have a wait as they try to fit everyone in and a wait for a none emergency appointment, but you will be seen and treatment top notch and meds dispensed all for a donation of your choosing and they are so grateful no matter what it is. You can check if you qualify before attending on line for free or low cost treatment

Fantastic experience: This little hospital, how can I leave a negative. They saved our dogs life, amazing what they can do just for a small donation. If they can do it, why can't other vets?? Reccomend everyone to take them here. They are fully trained vets who just care about animals so much and not about the money. Thank you to them all!

Positive experience: I’ve been with the PDSA for years, in another county, and for the most part they were fantastic. This practise however are a different story. The positives: - some absolutely lovely, helpful and friendly receptionists and nurses - some quite nice vets too - a charity that helps people like me The negatives: - one particular extremely unhelpful, unfriendly, downright rude female receptionist - a tendency by the vets to do as little as possibly in relation to an animals condition, treating them conservatively, not listening to you, the person who knows your pet better than anyone But, as they keep reminding people, they are a charity and there’s only so much they can do. Yes ok, I accept that, but, what I don’t accept is being told by TWO different vets, on TWO separate occasions that my pet has a tumour, they won’t operate, and due to his age it’s to be expected. Firstly, he’s 9! Secondly, as I also have pet insurance I had the PDSA refer him, and low and behold, there is NO tumour!! The PDSA wanted to put my dog to sleep, there and then, but I insisted he be referred. I’m still waiting on the outcome of his tests, and it may not be a good outlook, but the point is the PDSA gave a wrong diagnosis, even telling me that there’d be no hope even if they did operate, and it was to be expected due to his age. Even that was wrong according to the private vet, there would’ve in fact been a lot that could’ve been done, if it was a tumour. I won’t allow my boy to suffer, but I also won’t put him to sleep based on a diagnosis where I’m told “we’re inclined to think it’s a tumour”. I’ve given 3 stars because I can’t give 2.5 stars and at times the PDSA can be helpful, but this particular one needs to be assessed for its capabilities and people skills, because they’re severely lacking on both those counts. The fact they wrongly diagnosed my dog and wanted to put him to sleep, and previously it took a locum to diagnose a different condition he’s been suffering with for years, one that I’ve had to speak to them about on lots of occasions, and yet they continued to treat it conservatively. I have no choice but to continue using the PDSA as I’m on benefits due to being unable to work because of my own health conditions. Using the pet insurance hasn’t come cheaply, and I’ve had to get a loan to pay for my part of it, meaning I’ll struggle with day to day living. But my boy is my life, and he’s quite literally saved mine, so surely he deserves the best possible treatment I can give him.

Fantastic experience: The people here are absolutely brilliant. I've had my old girl (dog) here for a few yrs now. She has just been diagnosed with cancer and the vets and the receptionist has be brilliant with helping me and my girl through it. They are so understanding and I can't thank them enough. Thank you so much for your help so far

MK JB Posted on Google 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing place for your animal. All the staff need a medal for what they do and deal with on a daily basis. My animal has been looked after by Ross, and I highly recommend him and I also get the impression that the other vet consultants are amazing.

Andrew Fraser Posted on Google 3 years ago

Positive experience: Fantastic Charity which I support BUT!!! TOTALLY Depends on which Vet U Get! Had one Vet on emergency 24Hrs(Felling clinic not here) just wanted to put my 17yr old cat down strait away without examining her hardly! She was like a kitten and had years left in her only needed emergency Re-Hydration and she would have pulled Thru instead she died hrs Lata she had years ahead of her time thru lack of care I blame the Vet. Other vets looked after my Tom( looks like Tom from Tom n Jerry) her partner fantastically completely different attitude from the Vet couldn't do enough as I said depends on which ones on duty. If she had been on emergency duty the nite I took my Tiggy girl cat in she would still be alive. Still a good charity which I support but stand up to the vets and be insistent about treatment.

Martin Posted on Google 3 years ago

Negative experience: DISGRACEFUL! I rang PDSA Newcastle on Friday to get an emergency appointment for my very poorly dog Max. The vet refused to offer me an appointment claiming that they didn't think Max needed to be seen. He was in an awful lot of discomfort and pain. An hour or two later I rang a second time and pleaded for an appointment as Max was suffering and deteriorating rapidly. The vet again told the receptionist to tell me that Max didn't need to be seen. Unfortunately I had to go elsewhere to get him checked out, after which we had to get Max put to sleep today. I am appalled and extremely disappointed with the vet for not allowing Max to be seen by themselves. We had to pay for a consultation yesterday, along with a pain relief injection and some gabapentin. Today we had to pay for the procedure of having max put to sleep. This is a lot of money for someone (me) on benefits. It is money that I have had to borrow, and is money that I can't afford to pay back! The money, however, isn't the issue here - it's the negligence from the vet that caused my poor poor Max to suffer longer than necessary, and caused my anxiety and emotions to spiral like never before (I suffer from severe anxiety and depression anyway!). I've never had a worse veterinary experience in my whole life! Surely, and I can only hope that, an apology isn't too much to ask for here? It won't change what has happened and it won't make me feel any better about the shocking experience that we as a family have had to undergo... It would simply be admittance from the vet and the PDSA that they neglected my dog in the final 24 hours of his life - and it will therefore "closure" to this dreadful ordeal.

Fantastic experience: No appointment as everything happened so fast. I gave details on arrival and was seen within 15/20 minutes. The kids cat I thought had maybe dislocated her hip/leg. Unfortunately 2 vets confirmed a blood clot had travelled from her heart and hit her spine. Sadly comet had to be put to sleep. It wasn't something I had put on my daily planner so I was shocked and teary. They were very nice understanding and I am realising now how much they take on in their job role. I thank them and as sad as this visit was for me I would highly recommend this place. This place was so much better in every way than other places I can honestly say.

Fantastic experience: What can I say? Professional staff there when you need them. If your on a low income - dont be embarrassed only paying what you can afford, these people are there to help your pets & not to make profit. Give what you can - they helped me in an emergency when there was no way I could afford a private vet.

Fantastic experience: Had to take our youngest pooch here recently, staff are excellent, very friendly and caring. Been customer of PDSA for years and they have always been great.

Negative experience: I went via the phone line and was given an option to talk to a vet for advice but then the automated line gave me a webform link and ended the call. this isn't great, especially for people who can't or don't use the internet.
