Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital
Welcome to Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital, a dedicated wildlife hospital and charity that cares for sick, injured, and orphaned UK wildlife, open 365 days a year. Located in West Sussex and Hampshire, this facility treats over 3,000 wildlife patients annually, facing challenges such as habitat loss, pollution, and vehicle collisions. Our committed team of expert staff and volunteers works tirelessly to treat and rehabilitate these animals, with the goal of responsibly releasing them back into their natural habitats. Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital does not receive any government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of supporters and volunteers to continue its vital work.
In addition to direct care, we promote wildlife conservation and education through our 'Respect and Protect' outreach program, which aims to inspire a deeper understanding and respect for wildlife within local communities. We invite you to get involved, whether through donations, sponsoring an animal, or participating in community activities that reconnect you with nature. Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital is here to protect and care for wildlife that deserves our support.

Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital: Reviews
Positive experience: We have taken many injured and needy animals here. You don't get an update on the animal but hope that the team have managed to help it out. Had one dodgy staff member who did not give good advice and we had to take the hog back the next day, luckily the lady the next day was amazing.
Hi thank you for leaving feedback. Sorry to hear that the advice given was not correct and you had to return with hedgehog. With hundreds of patients to care for it is not possible to give updates to everyone, however if you give the hospital team a call after 4:30pm then they will be happy to give you an update. We are open 7 days a week, even bank holidays, Easter and Christmas day. Thanks for helping. All the best :)
Fantastic experience: Great place. Wonderful work they do.
Thank you for your kind review

Thank you for your kind review
Negative experience: I took a healthy one legged bird that I found to be looked after by Brent lodge and phoned up two days later to find out that Brent lodge had put it to sleep, Saying that it had no Quality of life it was happy healthy and eating, I thought brent lodge was a safe place for birds!
Hi Jake. We do understand how upsetting this can be.
The bird was missing a leg, which is a significant indicator that he was not in a healthy condition. Wild animals often rely on full mobility to forage, escape predators, and survive, and a permanent injury of this nature would prevent the bird from living a successful life if re-released. It is also important to note that wild animals instinctively mask pain, so injuries like this often cause considerable discomfort, even if it is not immediately obvious.
The bird was carefully assessed by our veterinary team, and it was determined that it would not be ethical to release the bird back into the wild, therefore the difficult decision was made to put him to sleep. We also believe that the bird is a non-native species which prevents us by law from releasing them back to the wild. As a wildlife hospital, our primary aim is rehabilitation and release where possible. We are not a sanctuary, and we are unfortunately unable to keep animals in long-term captivity where their quality of life would be compromised.
We always strive to act in the best interests of the animals, based on professional veterinary guidance and welfare considerations. If you would like to discuss this further then please give our vet a call 01243 641672.

Fantastic experience: Helping the wildlife
Thank you for your kind review
Fantastic experience: We didn't see the wildlife, but we were dropping off some more donations. This is a fantastic charity, and all animal and wildlife fans should help them with items they need to keep doing what they do.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. You support is very much appreciated :)
Negative experience: Very very dissapointed. Not really bothered, pleading poverty. Nature will take its course for the poor adult seagull in my garden.
Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear you were not happy with your experience, however, we feel that this is a very unfair review. We had a chat with the staff member on duty at the time of your call and they stated to you that we were not able to offer a rescue. It does state on our website that we are not a rescue service. If finders are able to transport patients to us we are more than happy to give an assessment and treat patients. If finders can not travel to us or the patient requires urgent vet treatment, then we would advise they try to take the patient to the vet, who like us, will treat wildlife at no fee to the finder. Alternatively, organisations such as the RSPCA and other local volunteer groups can offer rescue services.
We appreciate some people do not have access to transport, however if you were unable to transport the gull to us or your local vet then it is unfair to blame the suffering of the gull onto us when we gave you different options to get treatment for the gull. We are a charity dependent on the generosity of people, and yes we do have some lovely generous supporters and donors, but we simply do not have enough funding to provide a rescue service too. It currently costs over £1,300 a day to keep our charity and hospital running. If you would like to make a small contribute towards our running costs or to volunteer your time to help our busy animal care team we would love to hear from you. We hope you will still consider getting treatment for the poor gull. KR
Negative experience: Lady phone to report a injury swan who had hit a roof/wall, we manage to catch her rush where that vet said she probably has head trauma but needed a specialist wildlife vet, where another wildlife rescue took her to brett lodge within hours she was return to only drown herself in the water. And the rescue person to say at least she died water the water then place her in a black bag. As if she was rubbish. This upset a couple of holiday makers a young child who witness this... I'm disgusted with the way brett lodge vet knew she had head trauma had not been watched to see if she could walk either. Brett lodge clearly don't know on how to treat and look after swan or bigger birds. As I've heard from few places there not good with swans or bigger birds I will be avoiding using them in future to help these beautiful birds. I was horrific to witness myself but what got me was the lack of empathy "well at least she past away in the water" no if there vet had look at her would of clearly see she hit her head. The non wildlife vet knew this why didn't a wildlife vet see this. She hit a wall. She need a good day for an assessment not a few hours. Now her babies do have the cob looking after them but with bit of care. There mum may of been return in better way. Please think before you choice brett lodge for swans after yesterday experience I would not recommend them.
Thank you for your feedback and sorry for the delayed response. The adult female swan was brought into Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital on the afternoon of Tuesday 13th August. The subsequent very distressing events that occurred during her release have deeply saddened the team.
The patient history we received suggested that the swan had collided with a building. We were also told she had dependent cygnets. On admission she was examined immediately by veterinary surgeon, Richard Edwards. She was found to be bright, alert and despite our efforts to keep her calm she was showing signs of being unhappy at being captive. She had blood on her head and body which, on examination, had come from a wound to the top of her beak, consistent with a collision. The haemorrhage was stopped and she was clinically examined and appeared to be fine otherwise. An anti-inflammatory painkiller was administered and, given that she had dependent cygnets, it was decided to try and release her.
The behaviour she presented during her release was not consistent with how she appeared during her examination and we can only assume that the trauma she suffered during the collision was worse than it appeared. Possibly exacerbated by the stress of temporary captivity, handling and the journey back for release, this subsequently resulted in a rapid and catastrophic deterioration - possibly due to an intracranial bleed. Such occurrences are rare, but are always distressing to witness, especially because they cannot be predicted, are so acute in onset and there is little, if anything, that can be done with such rapid progression of symptoms.
Being a well-respected source of wildlife casualty care and knowledge for over 50 years, Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital assists local vets, RSPCA inspectors, members of the public and wildlife police officers with over 3,000 wildlife casualties each year. Running a busy charity and wildlife rehabilitation hospital can present both highs and lows. It can often be emotionally taxing to see animals suffer on a daily basis, especially when efforts are not successful. The workload can be demanding and the team often has to navigate challenges beyond their control. Despite these challenges our team undergo their work with dedication and compassion towards wildlife, with the welfare of patients at the forefront of everything they do. We are sorry that you felt the vet nurse was not empathetic towards the swan in this particular incident. She returned to Brent Lodge incredibly distressed and saddened by the loss. We have recently had some successful releases, including a swan who was attacked by a dog. It was rewarding to return him to his family following a short recovery period. It was just unfortunate that this swan recovery was not as successful.
We do acknowledge that it must have been distressing for members of the public to witness such an unfortunate event and to also watch the swan being placed in a bag. With regards to the comment about the swan passing away in the water, I assume the vet nurse was trying to make reference to the swan passing away in her natural habitat. This was not due to lack of empathy, however, we will take some of your feedback about staff conduct on board and implement it into future staff training to hopefully minimise the impact these events may have on bystanders or members of the public. If you would like to learn more about how we treat and rehabilitate our patients, swans in particular, then we would be happy to have a chat or arrange a private tour to hopefully restore some trust in our work. Please send an email to [email protected]

We took it home and placed the young bird in a box and phoned Brent Lodge who were brilliant giving advice and advised us to take it to their Siddlesham hospital to be isolated and given a check up before being released back into the wild once they were certain the bird was ready to be released. Thanks to all Brent Lodge volunteers especially to June who greated us on arrival and took care of our little friend so well.

The hedgehog had been born and raised in my garden and found by a neighbour very unwell. I was so thankful that the member of staff was still willing to help. She took him in straight away and explained his injuries to me. She also said she would call a vet ASAP as wasn't happy leaving him over night.
